I had the opportunity to attend Isabel Wilkerson’s talk on Global Migration. She discussed major topics from her book called The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration. I learned a lot about her book and why she wrote it. It took her a long time to write her book because she wanted to make sure she has plenty of research and information prior to publishing. She goes on to talk about the book and historical information and significance. The Great Migration (1915-1970), the largest integral migration in U.S. history, caused millions of African-Americans to flee from the South to new challenges and possibilities. If it was not for those millions of African- Americans that fled, then we would not have what we have now such as different genres of music. I am glad they took that leap of faith to go out to a “New World” and start a new journey where opportunities are endless. I know their journey was not easy, but what journey is it? This ties in with my Journeys trip theme: Diaspora meaning to scatter. Her message was very inspirational to what I want to do in the future, which is to study abroad and advance my major somewhere else.
