For my Public Health 101 course, I was able to evaluate and design a “Healthy City Plan” proposal. Although this assignment later became an extra credit assignment, I still took the opportunity to do it because I wanted to utilize my creative and critical thinking skills to come up with an idea of how I would want a healthy city to look like. I thoroughly enjoyed doing this assignment because I love coming up with ideas of my own in ways that would help nearby communities and the overall state to become better. For this reason, I proposed a “Healthy City Food Garden” in downtown Atlanta. Being that I have lived in Atlanta for a long time, I see the city evolving every single day. One of the things I see the city lacking is affordable access to healthy food. Healthy food is extremely hard to come by especially living in the city. Granted there are a few restaurants that may serve healthy options, but that becomes expensive after a while. Grocery stores such as Trader Joe’s or Sprouts are rare commodities especially. My goal is to design an affordable and accessible community garden within available green spaces of apartments, condominiums, and townhomes. Not only does this builds healthier eating habits, but enables residents to work together as a community.
